Atlanta Bicycle Accidents and Alcohol
Many people take to the streets on bicycles, whether as a way to get to school and work or for leisure. Bicycle riding can be fun, but it also can be extremely dangerous. While dangers often arise due to motorists on the road, bicyclists can also put themselves in danger by their actions. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are many bicyclists who drink and ride. Sadly, alcohol-related bicycle crashes have claimed the lives of many.
When alcohol is imbibed prior to riding a bike, injuries and fatalities can occur. In 2008, NHTSA reported that alcohol was involved in about 37 percent of traffic crashes that resulted in cyclists' fatalities. In approximately 31 percent of these accidents, the cyclists or drivers of the other vehicles were reported to have a 0.08 percent or higher blood alcohol concentration (BAC).
An additional 8 percent of crashes occurred with lower alcohol levels of about 0.01 percent BAC. This resulted in about 28 percent of cyclists who were killed and had a BAC of 0.01 percent, and approximately 23 percent of cyclists who were killed and had a BAC of 0.08 percent or higher. Males made up the majority of the cyclists killed or injured in traffic crashes, totaling approximately 87 percent of the fatalities and 79 percent of the injuries in 2008.
As a bicycle is considered a legal vehicle that can operate on the streets of Atlanta, cyclists need to follow the same rules of the road as other vehicles, which include "not driving drunk." Many cyclists feel like they can hop on their bicycles to ride home when they have had too much alcohol, believing it is a safer choice. However, cyclists who ride drunk hurt themselves, as well as others.
Cyclists are not the only ones to blame for alcohol-related bicycle crashes in Atlanta. Drunk drivers of motor vehicles can also cause a cyclist's injuries. When an Atlanta bicycle accident leaves you with serious injuries or claims the life of one of your family members, you may have rights to financial recovery due to the negligence of another.
