DeKalb Officer in Critical Condition After I-20 Crash

A DeKalb police officer was critically injured in a DeKalb County accident near Atlanta. On Sunday, July 17, 2011, a police officer was hit by a moving vehicle when he was investigating a Georgia car crash on Interstate 20.

This early morning wreck has landed Daniel LaCoste, a veteran police officer with DeKalb County police, in critical condition. DeKalb police will only confirm that LaCoste was responding to a wreck that took place overnight on I-20.

Apparently, Bryant Hill was driving a tractor-trailer and was sideswiped on I-20 near Evans Mill Road. When LaCoste got out of his car at the scene to talk with Mr. Hill about the accident, he was hit by a moving vehicle.

LaCoste's family cannot understand why he was hit since he was wearing a reflective vest. Renee Pitzer, the sister of Officer LaCoste, said "I don't know how they couldn't see the lights."

The family of Officer LaCoste said that his leg has been broken in two places, and he has a skull fracture. They are asking for the City of Atlanta to pray with them for his healing, as there is swelling near his brain stem

This crash is still under investigation.

Kalka & Baer would like to wish Officer LaCoste a complete recovery, and we would like to remind motorists to drive smart and be safe on Georgia roads this summer.
