A devastating Georgia car crash occurred in Walton County on June 25, 2011, ejecting many people from a sport utility vehicle. Georgia police indicated that this was a single-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday evening.
Police said that a 2001 Dodge Durango was traveling southbound on Preston Road and carrying ten people. It appears that the driver, Jeremy Gillstrap Sr., lost control of the Durango. When he over-corrected, he sent the SUV across the road, rolling it several times.
Eight of the passengers were ejected from the car at the time the SUV overturned. Two of the eight ejected were children who were severely hurt. Gillstrap, 26, and two of the children in booster seats were not seriously hurt. However, seven of the passengers were hurt and taken to different area hospitals for medical care.
The two individuals who sustained the most critical injuries were Matthew Gillstrap, 11, and 17-year-old Lindsay Garrett. The others who were injured include Jeremy Gillstrap Jr., 6, Grady Gillstrap, 4, Jessie Morgan, 19, Taylor Hendrix, 17, and Lydia Gillstrap, 2. All of the passengers in the SUV are from Monroe, which is about 45 miles east of Atlanta.
The people who were ejected from the vehicle were not wearing seatbelts. Authorities indicated that charges are pending against Gillstrap Sr.
