On Tuesday, March 8, 2011, two crashes occurred in Midtown and Downtown Atlanta involving police officers. Both car accidents happened on Tuesday night.
The first Atlanta car crash happened around 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of Peachtree Street and Ponce de Leon Avenue in Midtown. Authorities said that a vehicle failed to yield while turning left, thus colliding into Officer Jeff Davis, who was on an Atlanta Police Department motorcycle.
Officer Davis was ejected from his motorcycle and injured in the crash. Witnesses said that he was thrown at least 20 feet. Officer Davis suffered a broken leg and will have to undergo surgery. The driver of the automobile was charged with failure to yield while turning left.
The second accident that involved a police officer that night occurred moments later, when another motorcycle officer was responding to the first crash. Atlanta Police Officer Leslie Balsini collided with a minivan at Spring Street and Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard in Downtown Atlanta. Officer Balsini was treated for minor injuries at Grady Hospital and was released.
The driver of the minivan was charged with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
We are glad to hear that the officers involved in these two wrecks did not sustain major injuries, and wish both of them full and speedy recoveries.
