Kalka & Baer Represnts Mercer Univeristy Students

Those individuals looking to go to a bike ride in the Macon area know that there are not many places safe enough to take off around town. One concerned Mercer student took to his college paper to express his opinion on how safe cycling could better be achieved in the Macon area. The college student raises concern over the law that restricts persons over the age of 12 years old from riding their bike on a sidewalk.

Unless the local government creates its own ordinance allowing cyclists to share the sidewalks, there is no relief for cyclists who are concerned about sharing the road with motorists on some of Macon's busier streets. For specific streets in Macon, it would be against anyone's better judgment to attempt to go for a bike ride along with motorists. The student cites specifically Vineville Avenue and compares trying to ride down that busy street on a bicycle with walking through a minefield.
