On Friday, Sept 16, 2011, a 63-year-old man from Palos Heights was killed in a Georgia motorcycle accident that occurred just south of Atlanta on Interstate 55. According to police, the crash occurred early Friday morning and involved a car and motorcycle collision.
Richard J. Pedota, the motorcyclist, was traveling southbound on I-55 around 5:40 a.m. when a car attempted to pass him. The car came up from behind, but for an unknown reason the driver drifted onto the left shoulder and then overcorrected, striking the left side of the motorcycle.
Both the car and motorcycle landed in a ditch, and the motorcycle flipped over. When emergency responders arrived on the scene, they took Pedota to the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:19 a.m.
Police accused vehicle driver Tyler Balsley, 18, of drinking. He was charged with illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor, violation of the state's zero-tolerance law, and improper lane usage. Police also indicated that they may file more charges.
Balsley, a college student at Lincoln College, was not injured in the crash. His passengers were not injured in the wreck either.
Kalka & Baer is deeply saddened to hear about this deadly crash. We offer our condolences to the family and friends of Richard J. Pedota.
