Cobb County Roadways are Dangerous- Three Separate Accidents in Three Days

Three pedestrians have been killed in three separate Cobb County accidents in just a three-day span, according to the AJC. The first accident happened on a Thursday evening. Charles H. Collins was attempting to walk across a Smyrna road when he was struck and killed by a pickup truck. Another pedestrian accident also happened that Thursday night, but the man was not killed, only treated for serious injuries. Both drivers stopped at the scene and are not being charged with anything from the accident.

The second fatal Cobb County accident occurred the following night when Wendy Nolan stepped into the path of a traveling car on Austell Road. Sadly, she was pronounced dead. The driver of the car that hit and killed Nolan is not expected to be charged.

And then on Saturday night, a third fatal accident happened. An unidentified man was walking across South Marietta Parkway outside of the crosswalk and was struck by a car. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries. The AJC reports that the case is under investigation and charges are being considered. Anyone with information on the incident, please call Michael Gardner at (770) 794-5266.

These accidents serve as such a cautionary tale to anyone- be careful as a pedestrian when near a road or highway!

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) give the following facts and statistics about pedestrians killed from traffic accidents…

  • In 2008, 4,378 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in the United States
  • In 2008, 69,000 pedestrians were injured in traffic accidents in the United States
  • Pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than a vehicle passenger to be killed in a car crash on each trip
  • Most pedestrian deaths occur in urban areas, non-intersection locations and at night

These facts show that pedestrian injury and death from a traffic accident is extremely likely to happen. The 2008 statistics averages 1 crash-related death every 2 hours. That means every pedestrian is at risk, no matter the age or gender. Recently, we posted another blog about the increase of car-pedestrian accidents and that the increase is so severe, these accidents could be listed as a top ten world health problem.
