Fatal New Year’s Car Accidents on Georgia Roads

The New Year’s holiday travel period began on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 6 p.m. and ended on Monday, January 2, 2012 at midnight. The Georgia Department of Public Safety has released the number of traffic deaths that occurred in this 78-hour period.
Georgia State Troopers have indicated that a total of 12 fatalities occurred on Georgia roads over this New Year’s holiday weekend. These fatalities occurred all over Georgia:

  • Three fatal Atlanta auto accidents occurred, including one New Year’s Eve accident that killed the wife of Jeff Porter, an Atlanta Braves trainer.
  • One fatal DeKalb crash was reported
  • One deadly crash in Cartersville took place
  • One fatal accident in Macon occurred
  • One deadly wreck in Valdosta was reported
  • One fatal crash took place in Hinesville
  • One deadly Thomasville accident occurred
  • One fatal crash in Villa Rica was reported
  • One fatal accident occurred in Walton County

The Georgia State Patrol released further information on the weekend, showing initial counts indicated that there were 116 injuries and 225 crashes throughout the state. During the same period for the prior year there were 1,456 accidents and almost 600 injuries reported. Although there were fewer crashes and injuries compared to the prior year, the death toll remained at 12 for both years.
