Father Charged With DUI in DeKalb County Crash That Killed Daughter

On June 3, 2012, a father traveling with his four children on U.S. 78 near Stone Mountain Park crashed the family car and was arrested for driving drunk. According to police, Anthony Johnson, 35, was driving a Chrysler Pacifica eastbound near Hugh Howell Road when he lost control of his vehicle and ran the car off the road.

Sadly, Johnson’s 15-year-old daughter was killed in this DeKalb County crash. Additionally, his other daughter was seriously injured. Joy Johnson, 11, suffered a skull fracture and possible brain injury as a result of the wreck.

Johnson’s two other children, two boys aged 8 and 9, were in the car at the time of the accident. They were not injured. Because Johnson could not find his cell phone following the crash, he took his two boys and walked to a restaurant to call the police around 10:45 p.m.

When officers arrived on scene, they found Corliss Johnson, 15, dead and the 11-year-old in critical condition. Joy was transported in critical condition to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where she remains hospitalized. The two boys were also taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Bond was set for Anthony Johnson at $12,500 for driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane, endangering the life of a child while DUI, and vehicular homicide charges. After Johnson’s preliminary hearing, it was revealed that he had previously been arrested in 2002 and 2004 for DUI charges.

Kalka & Baer would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Corliss Johnson, and we would like to wish Joy Johnson a full and speedy recovery following this tragic accident near Atlanta.
