Space Heater Recalls

Fortunately, most of us in metro-Atlanta are able to stay off the roads during the latest deluge of ice and snow. Please remember to be safe as you bundle up in your home or apartment. If you are using a space heater, please do so safely following all of the manufacturer's directions and warnings. Improper use could cause a serious fire and personal injury.

Place space heater on a flat surface and keep it at last three feet away from drapes, bedding, clothing – anything that is combustible. Unless specifically designed for use in a bathroom, DO NOT use it in the bathroom or other area which could be damp. If it uses liquid fuel, make sure you use the exact fuel specified by the manufacturer. The wrong fuel could cause it to burn too hot and catch fire.

Unfortunately, even proper usage can result in a serious injury if the space heater is defective. Make sure that your space heater has not been recalled. You can go to the website for the Consumer Product Safety Commission at www.saferproducts.gov for a list of recently recalled space heaters and other consumer products. Some sold to citizens in metro-Atlanta and other parts of Georgia that have recently been recalled are:

  • Optimus - Portable Infared Radiant Quartz Space Heater
  • Big Lots – Portable Space Heater and Portable Oscillating Space Heater
  • Creative Heating Solutions – Portable Space Heater model numbers CH-750, CH750FC, CH-1500 and CH-1500FC

The above list is not exhaustive. Please do a quick check on www.saferproducts.gov before using your space heater or other alternative home heating device.
