Aluminum Plant Explosion in Newnan Leaves at Least Five Injured Employees

An explosion occurred at the Bonnell Aluminum Plant in Newnan, Coweta County, this morning, leaving at least five employees were injured. The blast originated in the casting department at approximately 9:15 a.m., and left a hole in the plant’s roof. Bonnell Aluminum is one of the leading manufacturers of aluminum extrusions in the U.S., with several plant locations across the nation.

One of the employees was airlifted to an Atlanta hospital, two were sent to a local facility, and two employees received treatment immediately at the site. Some reported that shrapnel from the blast was sent careening into nearby buildings and other businesses. Witnesses also reported metal pieces flying straight up into the air, some reaching as high as 30 feet.

Emergency protocol for the plant called for an immediate evacuation of the area, and employees were told to stay home. All roads leading to the plant had been closed off until about half past noon, and was then reopened. Relatives and other close ones convened at Fire Station 138, located on Temple Avenue, hoping to look for loved ones who were employees of the plant and information. Damage to the plant only “cosmetic,” according to a report from AJC.com and that it is is not a “hazmat” situation.
