As a Pedestrian, How Do I Avoid Car Accidents?

In a recent blog, we discussed two ways that pedestrians can help avoid being involved in an Atlanta pedestrian-car accident are to avoid jaywalking and to being a responsible pedestrian.
  • Avoid jaywalking. Jaywalking is a common term that refers to pedestrians illegally or recklessly crossing a roadway. Sometimes that occurs at road intersections as pedestrians cross without waiting for the permissive sign to change. Sometimes it occurs when pedestrians cross a road not at an intersection. According to a report done by the Federal Highway Administration, pedestrians that are in a group tend to not use the signs in a crosswalk. Whereas, pedestrians individually follow the rules more frequently.
  • If walking or jogging, exercise responsibly. That could include wearing proper workout clothes to be visible to vehicles. At nighttime, wear reflective gear. Also, it helps to walk or run in a predictable manner…meaning that either run on the sidewalk or on the shoulder of the road.
