Was Your Accident Caused by Tire Tread?

Car Accidents Due to Driver Negligence

Due to the fact that many vehicles have tire blowouts, tire chunks are thrown onto the interstate frequently. Tire pieces on the highway often force motorists to swerve or stop suddenly to avoid hitting them. If motorists have to make such maneuvers to avoid hitting tire pieces, they can cause car accidents, especially if the tire tread is from a big rig. Tire pieces can vary in size, but they are always dangerous for motorists, especially motorcyclists. When a tire blows, the vehicle or motorcycle next to or behind that automobile can be put in a very dangerous situation.

Tires usually blow due to lack of maintenance or due to the negligence of vehicle owners.

Tire Tread Causes a Fatal Georgia Crash

In fact, airborne tire tread triggered a deadly Gwinnett County motorcycle accident recently. Lonnie Cross, a 35-year-old motorcyclist, was riding his bike on northbound I-85 at the I-985 split when he hit tire tread. The tire chunk actually hit another car first and then flew up and hit his motorcycle. The tire tread caused Cross to lose control of his motorcycle, making him fall onto the roadway and into the path of an oncoming semi truck. Sadly, the trucker did not have time to stop or swerve, and thus ran over Cross. Cross was pronounced dead at Gwinnett Medical Center.

Seriousness of Tire Tread

Although tire is made of rubber, it can be extremely hazardous when a vehicle or motorcycle runs into it. Some dangerous tire tread scenarios include:

  • Cars swerve around it only to cause a side-swipe accident;
  • Vehicles stop suddenly to avoid it but are rear-ended;
  • Automobiles drive over it, causing it to fly up and hit another car or motorcyclist.

Car owners need to remember to inspect and maintain their tires frequently, keeping them properly inflated. Tire blowouts can occur due to manufacturing defects as well. If a tire blowout caused your car accident injuries, you may be entitled to financial compensation from the negligent driver or tire manufacturer.
