Georgia Crash Sends Spalding County Sheriff into a Coma

On Thursday, June 23, 2011, a Georgia car accident occurred between a grandfather and his grandson. The grandfather happens to be 63-year-old Spalding County Sheriff Dee Stewart, and the grandson is Spalding Deputy Chad Gasaway.

The crash took place around 1:30 p.m. on Highway 19/41 in Griffin. Reports indicate that Gasaway was driving his personal car, a Ford Explorer, north on Highway 19/41 while off-duty when he struck the sheriff's car.

The sheriff was pulling onto the highway from Moose Ledge Road while on patrol in his sheriff's Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck when the wreck occurred. The force of the impact sent the pickup truck into the nearby woods.

Stewart suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was taken by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center with a head injury on Thursday, and doctors placed him in a medically induced coma and put him on a ventilator. The Sheriff's spokesman Captain Tony Ranieri indicated that Stewart remains in critical but stable condition.

Gasaway suffered minor injuries in the crash, and will be off of work for a few days while recovering.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the cause of this Georgia accident.

Kalka & Baer would like to wish a full recovery to Sheriff Dee Stewart. We send our thoughts to his family and friends during this difficult time.
