A local Georgia woman, Debra Thornton who suffered a broken ankle as a result of a car wreck caused by a drunk driver was recently awarded $166,000 by a jury. The award included $125,000 for pain and suffering. Ms. Thornton is still suffering residual effects as a result of this accident as she has pain and loss of motion in the ankle that was broken. The wreck occurred on Candler Road after Jesus Herrera's Chevy Tahoe struck a Honda Accord that was stopped to make a left hand turn. The force of the impact knocked the Honda into the oncoming traffic lane where it struck Thornton's PT Cruiser. Herrera fled the scene of the accident, but was later apprehended by police. He had a blood alcohol content of .231 or almost 3x the legal limit. Herrera pled guilty to DUI and serious injury by motor vehicle and was sentenced to 5 years in prison followed by 5 years of probation.
