The New Year’s holiday travel period began on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 6 p.m. and ended on Monday, January 2, 2012 at midnight. The Georgia Department of Public Safety has released the number of traffic deaths that occurred in this 78-hour period.Georgia State Troopers have indicated that a total of 12 fatalities occurred on Georgia roads over this New Year’s holiday weekend. These fatalities occurred all over Georgia:
The Georgia State Patrol released further information on the weekend, showing initial counts indicated that there were 116 injuries and 225 crashes throughout the state. During the same period for the prior year there were 1,456 accidents and almost 600 injuries reported. Although there were fewer crashes and injuries compared to the prior year, the death toll remained at 12 for both years.
