On Wednesday, February 22, 2012, a bicyclist was hit in a Georgia car and bicycle accident in Buckhead. Atlanta police reported that the cyclist was hit by a drunk driver in sport utility vehicle (SUV), and indicated that he was badly hurt.
Atlanta police said the bicyclist was hit by the SUV early Wednesday around 1 a.m. The accident occurred on Roswell Road near a three-way split with West Paces Ferry and Peachtree roads.
News reporters reported that at least three DeKalb County police cars were at the scene investigating. Witnesses told police that the bicyclist had the right of way when the SUV hit him and threw him from his bicycle; however, the driver of the SUV fled the scene.
Christopher Hamer-Hodges, the bicyclist injured in this wreck, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with broken ribs, a broken leg and possible head trauma.
Kim Jones, spokeswoman for the Atlanta police department, said “the driver of the vehicle did not stop, but was stopped by police a short time later.” Police identified the driver as David Seigel, who was the driver of the Mercedes SUV with front-end and windshield damage. Because police suspected intoxication, they gave the driver a breathalyzer test.
Seigel was charged with reckless driving, following too closely, and a DUI, after he blew a .142.
Our Atlanta bicycle accident attorneysat Kalka & Baer would like to wish Christopher Hamer-Hodges a full and fast recovery, and would like to remind motorists to not drive drunk.
