Over the weekend, a Douglas County accident involving a motorcycle, a truck and a car left one person dead. The accident happened on Interstate 20 near Lee Road. Jason Strickland was driving his motorcycle when he was hit from behind by a car. The driver of the car, Francisco Ferrer, struck Strickland with such a force as Strickland was thrown from his motorcycle into the road. Strickland was then hit by a truck and killed in the accident. No one else was injured in the accident.
Ferrer has been charged with driving under the influence. The truck driver has not been charged with anything, but the police investigation is still ongoing, according to the AJC.
The week before the Douglas County accident, another motorcycle accident left a Clayton County sheriff deputy in critical condition. Deputy Amy Kemper was hit head-on by a driver under the influence of alcohol. The accident happened in Coweta County on Highway 29 near Lake Ridge Way, according to WSBTV.com.
The driver, Christopher Brown, was driving his SUV when he crossed into the opposite side of traffic and crashed straight into Kemper on her motorcycle. Apparently, Brown kept driving for nearly one mile until his SUV broke down. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, causing a serious injury by vehicle and fleeing the scene of an accident.
Knowledge is power. Knowing the facts about drunk driving might change the epidemic in our society. According to the DUI Foundation, on average, a first time drunk driving offender driven drunk 87 times prior to being arrested. We do see many Georgia traffic accidents that are caused by drivers who are impaired by alcohol. These two accidents involving motorcyclists bring light to that fact. A small error becomes magnified because the drunk driver’s inhibitions are lowered. Our firm advises people to become as educated as possible on the dangers of drunk driving and the consequences it can have on the driver and the other drivers around him/her.
