"A Cyclist Will Be Hurt Once Every Four Years"

A new study finds that the rate at which accidents happen to bicyclists is about once every four years. We have the experience and expertise to help you recover.

Unfortunately, bicycle safety studies are far and few between. Because of this, we are left with simple estimations about the percentages of accidents and injuries sustained by cyclists. It has been estimated that the fatality for a cyclist wearing a helmet is about the same as that of a motorist per mile of travel. Many of the numbers used to estimate these accidents come from emergency rooms which doesn't account for accidents where cyclists don't seek medical attention.

A recent study coming out of Portland, OR tried something new to help bridge the gap between estimation and fact. This study aims to better understand and track bicycle-related injuries. The study collected this data by enlisted around one thousand bike commuters to track their accidents and injuries over one year's time. This study indicates that there is a five times greater chance of sustaining an injury more serious than a simple scrape when riding a bike as opposed to driving.

Every cyclist should remember two very important points:

  1. No matter how experienced you are as a cyclist, accidents and crashes happen; and
  2. Because of the high accident rate pre cyclist, all cyclists need to wear helmets

The study found that inexperienced cyclists and experienced cyclists experienced roughly the same amount of accidents within the year. The accidents that most interested the members conducting the study were the 20% that were caused by poor roadway design and maintenance.

A majority of these accidents were caused by easily correctable hazards, such as gravel in the roadways, debris and metal plates in construction zones, and rail tracks. These types of hazards are generally under the control of the city and state officials. Remember to use extreme caution in areas where these hazards are likely to be present.
