Raised Pavement Markers are Dangerous

We have all seen them around town or driven over them, white raised pavement markers, also known as road turtles. Many motorists probably do not give them a second thought or think much about them, but those on two wheels are criticizing the addition of these road markers around.

Cyclists have been calling these road markers “road turtles” because their shape and size resembles the shell of a turtle. Because of this, many avid cyclists are starting to wear shirts with the slogan, “Save the Whales, Annihilate the Turtles.” Obviously, the actual turtle animal is not what cyclists are against, but rather the road markers.

Why are cyclists against road bumps?

When a bicycle’s wheels strike a road bump, problems can occur. In fact, road bumps have been a hazard to cyclists. When road bumps are located around corners, it doesn’t give a cyclist much notice to ride around them because a cyclist is generally looking to see if it is safe to make the turn. After he makes that turn, he may literally come face to face with a road bump, as it may have caused him to fall off his bike in a Georgia bicycle crash. There are opponents to the addition of road turtles, many cyclists believe them to be a danger and a waste of taxpayers’ money.

However, Atlanta continues to install these white plastic road markers all around town to outline parking zones and no-drive areas. Sometimes, they are even placed next to white “fog” lines, which can be of great danger to cyclists traveling next to the road.

This has left many wondering what ever happened to the old white lines to mark no travel zones. If Georgia towns want to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists in addition to encouraging a healthier lifestyle, then cyclists are asking these cities not to install dangerous road markers or road turtles.

By making sure that road markers are not placed in a dangerous place, bicyclists will be able to reduce their chances of being injured in bicycle accidents.

If you were injured in a bicycle accident due to no fault of your own, you should talk with a concerned and knowledgeable Atlanta accident attorney at Kalka & Baer LLC at (404) 907-1594 in a free, no-obligation legal consultation today.
