5 Tire Tips All Motorcyclists Should Learn

Tire conditions are very important to all motorists, but they are especially critical to motorcyclists. When you only have two tires keeping your vehicle connected to the road, it is vital that those two tires be in great condition so that you can prevent a needless motorcycle accident from occurring. For this reason alone, our personal injury lawyers would like to review five tire tips.

These safety tips include inspecting the following:

  • Age of Tires. For motorcyclists who take their bikes out only once and awhile, you need to be concerned about the age of the tires. Even tires that are barely used can dry out from age. Sidewall cracks are signs of aging tires. If there is evidence of cracking, or if the tire is more than three years old, it is time for a new tire. The age of the tire is located in the sidewall digits that start with DOT. The last four digits will indicate the week and year the tires were manufactured. If the digits were 2211 that would mean your tires were made in the 22nd week of the year 2011.
  • Flat Spots. If there is a part on your tire that looks flat, so that the rounded profile all the way around your tire is missing, then you may have flat spots. Inspect your front tire from the front and your rear tire from the rear to determine if you have flat spots. Sometimes tires can develop flat spots from highway riding. If the center of your tire is flattened out, even if your tires have good tread left, you need to replace your tires because your bike won’t lean properly.
  • Tire Condition. Tires that are cupped, scalloped, bald, or too worn are visible signs that the tire is not in good condition anymore. If the bars are showing or if there is a scalloping effect, the tires need to be changed out immediately for your own protection.
  • Valve Stem Covers. Yes, valve stem covers are important. Inspect them and replace them if they are missing or cracked. Valve stem covers help keep moisture and dirt out and keep air in. They are an essential part of the sealing system. The best valve stem caps have rubber gaskets in them.
  • Tread Pattern. Make sure that the two tires are the same brand and model. It is not recommended to mix two different tires because the tread patterns would be different, which could cause deadly results.

You could do everything right and still get injured in a motorcycle wreck due to someone else’s negligence. If you want to learn how to protect your rights, call a skilled Atlanta injury lawyer at Kalka & Baer LLC at (404) 907-1594 for a free consultation today.
