How to Drive Safely in the Rain

You may have taken off on a ride when it was nice outside, only to find that you get stuck in the rain by accident and are experiencing wet asphalt. It may have not been your choice to ride your motorcycle in the rain, but it happened. Now that you have experienced it, you may be more likely to venture back out into the rain for another ride, or you may get stuck in it by accident again.

Whatever it is, riders need to know tips for riding in the rain in order to prevent motorcycle accidents. If it’s your first time riding in the rain or your hundredth time, you need to be aware of potential hazards that are dangerous for motorcyclists that could lead to a motorcycle crash.

5 Tips for Safe Motorcycle Riding in the Rain

  • Different Surface Textures: There are many parking lots that have concrete surfaces that turn slick in the rain. Be careful when entering parking areas and ride slower than normal if it is raining out. In addition, there are painted surface areas in the roads, such as crosswalks and High Occupancy Vehicle lanes. They are unsafe for motorcyclists in the rain, as they can cause a bike to slide out. Be cautious when riding over these areas when it’s wet out, and sit up straight to turn rather than lean into the turn during these conditions.
  • Manhole Covers and Railroad Tracks: Manhole covers and railroad tracks are everywhere. Unfortunately, in the rain, these are very slick and become a motorcyclist’s enemy. It is best to avoid these all together. If you can’t, then keep the bike straight and ride over them slowly.
  • Rainbows: If you see a red and blue rainbow on the ground, it means oil, which can be very dangerous for motorcyclists. Avoid them and ride as slowly as possible.
  • Potholes: When it is raining outside, water collects in potholes. Try to avoid puddles.
  • Tires: If you are riding in the rain often, it is best to have the proper tires. Look for rain tires that have proper treads, so that they will provide the best traction in the rain.
