Safety Tips for Motorcyclists and Motorists

Although motorcycle crashes and fatalities occur for many reasons—such as speeding, aggressive driving, drunk driving, and not wearing a helmet—the number one concern to motorcycle operators is sharing the road with motor vehicles. Other drivers of automobiles present the biggest safety risk to motorcycles and are the number one factor in motorcycle fatalities. Motorcyclists know that risks come with riding their bikes. Because motorcycles are small, they can be overlooked easily or other drivers aren't looking out for them. For this reason, automobiles and motorcycles sharing the road in Georgia need to drive carefully.

Allstate released motorcycle safety tips for both motorcyclists and motorists in the hopes of increasing awareness of sharing the roads. These tips include:

  • Realize that most motorists can't spot a motorcyclist. This is the biggest problem factor contributing to motorcycle crashes.
  • Pay attention to blind spots. Since motorcycles can disappear in blind spots, motorists need to be aware of the traffic around them and look twice prior to changing lanes.
  • Presume that motorcycles are closer than they appear. Sometimes, it is hard for motorists to determine the proximity of their cars to motorcycles. Because motorcycles are small, speed is often hard to evaluate.
  • Further following distance is needed. Because bikers often slow down by downshifting instead of braking, don't expect to see brake lights. Allow more time to stop when following a motorcyclist, especially on wet roads.
  • Understand that bikers have to change lanes. Motorcyclists will need to change lane positions to adjust to the wind, avoid road debris, and be in a better position for other motorists to see them.

Although these are good tips, other points are also important for drivers to consider. Motorcyclists do not have airbags and seatbelts to protect them or metal surrounding them to take the majority of the impact in case of a motorcycle crash. Remember, when a car crashes into a motorcycle, the biker most likely will sustain catastrophic injuries or die. Even though bikers have more maneuverability than vehicles, they should not be expected to get out of the way of vehicles.

Both parties need to watch out for each other and do a better job of sharing the roads in order to save lives. If you have been injured or have lost a loved one in a motorcycle crash in Atlanta or anywhere else in Georgia, then you need to speak with an experienced motorcycle accident attorney. If the crash was due to the negligence of another motorist, then you may be entitled to monetary compensation for your injuries and damages.
