Warning for Recent Motorcycle Recalls

When riding a motorcycle in Atlanta or anywhere throughout the state of Georgia, a biker needs to know that his bike is reliable and that he can depend on it to get him where he is going safely. Of course, there are always negligent motorists who put bikers at risk of getting injured in Atlanta motorcycle accidents, but the motorcycle itself is not the thing that should place a biker at risk.

Two major motorcycle manufacturers recently announced:

  • Recall #1: Honda has recalled approximately 126,000 motorcycles due to a potential braking problem on 2001–2010 and 2012 GL 1800 Gold Wing touring motorcycles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall occurred because of a potential rear brake issues that could lead to a motorcycle crash or even a fire. The issue with the brakes in these models is that there is a potential for the rear brake to continue to stay partially engaged, even after it has been released. If the motorcyclist continues riding with a brake that is partially applied, it could increase the risk of an accident or cause enough heat to start a fire or small explosion in the rear brakes.
  • Recall #2: Harley-Davidson announced a recall of approximately 300,000 Harley motorcycles due to potential brake light failure and possible brake fluid leak that could affect rear brake performance. The motorcycles recalled are certain Touring, CVO Touring, and Trike motorcycles from 2009–2012. The manufacturer said that on certain models the rear brake light could get excessive heat from the exhaust system, which could cause the brake light to fail. The heat could also cause the brake fluid to leak at the brake light switch, which could lead to a motorcycle crash due to the affected rear brake.

As Atlanta accident attorneys, we know that brakes are a critical safety component to any vehicle and that, if not working correctly, they could increase the risk of serious injuries to bikers in Georgia motorcycle accidents. If you were injured in an Atlanta motorcycle crash due to defective brakes or another manufacturing defect, you may have rights to compensation.
