Addition of Electronic Stability Control

NHTSA Hopes for Fewer Truck Accidents

Because truck accidents are typically very serious in nature, large commercial trucks are a safety concern for other motorists sharing the road with them due to their sheer size and weight. If you have been involved in one, then you most likely know the severe injuries these types of crashes produce, especially rollover truck accidents. Rollover accidents in Georgia-and throughout this nation-are one of the deadliest types of traffic accidents.

Because electronic stability control has already helped to reduce rollover accidents in sport utility vehicles, the government is proposing that all large commercial trucks, motor coaches, and large buses be equipped with electronic stability controls. Recently the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced their proposal requiring electronic safety control (ESC) systems to be equipped in new trucks and buses as standard equipment. The reason they are proposing this requirement is to prevent and reduce rollover truck crashes, injuries and fatalities.

Some large commercial trucks and busses already have ESC systems, but they are not standard equipment. After studies revealed that these systems could reduce or prevent rollover crashes, NHTSA wants to make ESC systems standard. In fact, federal regulators said that with electronic stability controls on large trucks, it could prevent over fifty percent of rollover crashes each year.

How Does Electronic Stability Control Work?

The system uses computer-controlled braking to help reduce rollover truck accidents. It does this by sensing when the truck driver over-steers, potentially causing skidding or loss of control. When this happens, the system will change the engine’s output by using automatic computer-controlled braking to assist the driver.

ESC to Reduce Crashes

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood stated the proposal “is a major step forward to improving the safety of large commercial trucks, motor coaches and other large buses.” NHTSA estimates that the ESC system would prevent about 2,329 accidents involving trucks and buses, and as many as 60 fatalities each year.

While our Atlanta truck accident attorneys look forward to fewer truck accidents and injuries, we also know that this safety system will not prevent all truck crashes in Georgia.
