When your child asks you if he can ride his bike in the street, your typical response is probably, "Sure, but not without your helmet." Helmets are essential components when riding bicycles, especially for children's safety. In fact, Georgia law states that children under the age of 16 must wear helmets when riding bicycles. it is also a smart and safe decision.

Sadly, the majority of fatal bicycle accidents in Georgia and throughout the nation involve head and brain injuries. By wearing helmets, children as well as adults can prevent serious injuries to their heads. But, how do you know which helmet to purchase for your kids? Since there are so many bicycle helmets on the market, it sometimes can be overwhelming and confusing to determine the best choice.would be a better choice.

Look for helmets that comply with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and the Snell Memorial Foundation, as they all have high helmet standards for impact safety. These helmets should have labels or stickers indicating their compliance.

Also, Consumer Reports conducted a test in 2009 in which it rated kid's bicycle helmets for impact protection, ventilation, and retention. Here are the results:

Impact Test Results

Good: Schwinn Thrasher

Good: Uvex Cartoon

Most of the helmets tested in the excellent category for retention roll-off tests, which indicates how easily a bicycle helmet that has a well-adjusted strap can be tipped off.
