Georgia Summertime Bicycle Safety

Now that children are out of school and the weather is warmer, more and more children are riding bicycles. Children from ages 5-14 are especially active on their bikes, and make up about 20% of bicycle accidents with motor vehicles.

Because of this frightening statistic, parents and children need to take certain steps to help prevent Georgia bicycle crashes with automobiles from occurring. One way to do this is to make sure that children can be seen. Children should wear bright colored clothing when riding their bikes so that drivers of motor vehicles will see them.

Also, children should be taught about the rules of the road, including:

  • Look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Stop at stop signs and traffic lights.
  • Ride with the flow of traffic.
  • Ride to the farthest right side of the road.
  • Wear a bicycle helmet.
  • Never carry someone else on the bike.

It is a good idea for parents to regularly check their child's bicycle to make sure that the tires are inflated properly, brakes are working correctly, handlebars are fastened securely, and seat height is adjusted properly.

Although you and other parents cannot stop every Georgia bicycle accident involving children from occurring, you can rest assured that you helped prepare your child and reduced his or her chances of being involved in a bicycle crash.
