Intersections are often the locations of deadly accidents in Georgia and throughout the nation. This is why the city of Marietta is constructing its first traffic roundabout. The roundabout is scheduled to be built this summer at the intersection of Fairground Street and Allgood Road.

Marietta Police Chief Dan Flynn says he supports this roundabout, as confusing intersections are dangerous for drivers. This specific intersection sees about 1,200 vehicles during peak hours and approximately 14,220 vehicles per day.

Since March 2009, there have been 12 Marietta car accidents at this intersection alone.

Flynn says that the roundabout will make traffic at the intersection safer by routing cars in an effective manner. He also points out that the roundabout in west Cobb at Villa Rica and West Sandtown is working well.

Roundabouts have gained in popularity in the last couple of years since the Federal Highway Administration distributed guidelines for them. The concept of a roundabout requires drivers who enter the roundabout to yield to other drivers while traveling in a counter-clockwise direction until coming to their exit.

Over 12 counties in Georgia have roundabouts, including DeKalb, Douglas, Rockdale, Floyd, and Gwinett, with more on the way. Many officials believe that roundabouts will lead to a decrease in Georgia traffic accidents at intersections.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, the intersections that have already been changed to roundabouts have seen a 35% reduction in all accidents and a 60% reduction in injury accidents.
