Most Common Types of Car Accidents

Atlanta Injury Blog > 2011 > March > Most Common Types of Car Accidents

You may have been sitting in stop-and-go traffic or at a stoplight when another car rear-ended you. This all-too-common type of crash is in fact the most common type of car accident in Georgia and in the country. Rear-end accidents in Atlanta and throughout this nation occur frequently and can cause serious injuries to the driver of the car that is hit.

The National Safety Council reveals that over 2.5 million rear-end accidents occur each year in this nation.

A rear-end accident occurs when a driver does not have time to stop before colliding into the back of another vehicle. Because rear-end accidents are sudden and forceful, they cause the occupants in the vehicle to jolt forward. This intense jerking motion can often create serious injuries to the driver and passengers of the vehicle that is hit.

Why Are Rear-End Accidents Common?

Studies have reviewed the reasons why drivers frequently get into rear-end accidents and have revealed that there are several factors that could cause a driver not to be able to stop in time.

Reasons include:

  • Distracted driving (talking on cell phone, texting while driving, etc.)
  • Speeding, tailgating and aggressive driving
  • Negligent behavior (not paying attention)
  • Environmental factors such as glare from the sun

Psychological studies have even found that motorists often cannot perceive how fast the car in front is braking or determine the urgency of it. If drivers were paying more attention to the road or left more space behind the vehicle they were following, more accidents might be avoided.

What types of injuries can occur in a rear-end accident?

Rear-end accidents can cause serious injuries to a driver and passengers, including neck and back injuries, broken bones, head injury, spinal cord injury, and more. Sometimes even minor injuries that result from a rear-end car crash can bother a victim for the rest of their life.
