Cobb County Cyclist Survives after Hit-and-Run Crash

On Wednesday, April 13, 2011, a teacher was en route to school on her bicycle when she was hit by a car on Austell Road. Officials indicated that the Cobb County bicycle accident occurred near the intersection of Hicks Road around 6:30 a.m.

Carrie Kane was riding to work when a car slammed into her, knocking her off of her bicycle and into the busy traffic on Austell Road. The driver of the car continued to drive instead of stopping to see if Kane was injured.

Cobb County Sherriff's deputies found Kane lying in the road and rescued her from oncoming traffic. They also recovered a black driver's side mirror on the street, and are processing it to determine if there is a vehicle identification number or if they can determine the vehicle manufacturer.

Kane injured her elbow and shoulder, sustained temporary brain damage, short term memory loss and dizziness, and suffered some scratches and bruises to her body. Her neurologist explained that her bicycle helmet, which was damaged in the accident, saved her life. Although Kane feels lucky to be alive, she can't believe that someone would just leave her lying in the road.

Kane teaches third grade at Skyview Elementary School near Mableton, and said the driver who hit her needs a lesson in morals.

If you witnessed this hit-and-run bicycle crash in Georgia, contact the Cobb County police.

Kalka & Baer would like to wish Kane a full and speedy recovery.
