I recently read an interesting article that discusses the times cyclists should not take off for a bicycle ride. First, by law cyclists are not able, by law, to ride on an interstate highway in the state of Georgia, but other than the cyclist can basically ride anywhere else they like at any time of day. But, does this mean cyclists should take full advantage of this freedom ride their bikes all over the place at any time they please? For safety reasons the obvious answer to that question is no. The following are examples of when riding a bike should be avoided:
1. Riding a bike during the night accounts for a majority of bicycle related deaths. Even though only a few people chose to ride at night, deaths from riding a night account for about 50% of bicycling fatalities.
2. Another dangerous time to jump on a bike is in the morning when the sun is rising. The glare from the sun can dramatically reduce the visibility of drivers.
3. Also, because of the heavy amounts of traffic on the streets at commuting hours, riding a bike in an area that is not bike friendly during rush hour is not the safest time to ride. While some are advocating bicycle commutes because of the rising costs in gas, if there is not a safe bicycle commute route then it may not be worth the risk.
