What is a safe distance when passing a bicyclist?

Summer is here, and many are taking advantage of beautiful weather by spending time outdoors. As more cyclists make their appearance on the road ways, understanding the safety requirements of sharing the road is important. On May 11, 2011 the Governor signed the House Bill 101 which was introduced to provide safer riding standards for cyclists and motorists. An important clarification made by the legislature was their definition of the term "safe distance" in regard to a motor vehicle passing a cyclist. The bill now requires that when passing a cyclist, motorists should allow for three feet or more between themselves and a cyclist.
