Georgia Traffic Fatalities Reduced Over Labor Day Holiday Weekend

Georgia Traffic Fatalities Reduced Over Labor Day Holiday Weekend

Atlanta Injury Blog > 2011 > September > Georgia Traffic Fatalities Reduced Over Labor Day Holiday Weekend

The Georgia State Patrol was geared up for the busy 2011 Labor Day holiday weekend, as they were out patrolling interstates and secondary roads during this holiday travel period. Their goal was to enforce the use of seatbelts, and to target impaired drivers and speeders to reduce the chances of wrecks throughout the state.

The Georgia State Patrol asked drivers before this holiday weekend to follow the posted road signs and traffic rules, including the use of seatbelts. In addition, officials reminded drivers to not drink and drive, not to tailgate, and not to speed for their own safety.

Last year in 2010, 14 people died in Georgia crashes on that weekend. A total of 2,580 accidents took place over the 78-hour holiday travel period, resulting in 1,042 people injured.

During the same holiday weekend this year that started at 6 p.m. on Friday, September 2, 2011, and ended at midnight on Labor Day, traffic fatalities were cut in half. Seven people died in Georgia motor vehicle accidents this year, and 225 people were injured in 435 crashes.

One of the fatal traffic accidents occurred in metro Atlanta this year on Hickory Flat Highway in Cherokee County, claiming the life of 36-year-old Jason Denny. Police indicated that they believed speed to be a factor in this crash.

Although any traffic fatality is tragic, the total numbers of fatalities, injuries, and Georgia crashes were drastically reduced this year compared to last year.

The Kalka Law Group is deeply saddened to hear of these traffic fatalities and wish the families and friends of all who were affected by this deadly Labor Day holiday weekend strength to get through this very difficult time.
