A boat collision of two boats on Lake Lanier late Saturday night that left one man dead and one woman seriously injured, according to the Rome News-Tribune.

Gwinnett County police responded to the report of a boating accident near Lower Overlook Park. Two boaters, a Cumming man and woman, were crossing the lake in a ski boat when the boat struck an object in the water, according to the AJC. The two abandoned the damaged boat and swam to a nearby shore to find help. After climbing the bank to reach Buford Dam Road, they flagged a passing car and called the accident into police.

Emergency response authorities found a second boat, a pontoon boat, on the lake near the East Bank Park. A woman was found aboard the boat badly injured, and a man was found in the water- sadly he was already dead. This collision is still under investigation by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, but it looks to just be an unfortunate accident.

Lake Lanier is a large lake, busy with boaters. Boating accidents can happen. It is always important to be prepared for a possible accident with the proper safety gear such as lifejackets, a radio, etc. It is also important for boaters to know what’s required under the Georgia Boat Safety Act when a boat accident takes place.

An operator involved in a boating accident must:

  • Stop his or her vessel immediately at the scene of an accident
  • Assist anyone injured or in danger from the accident, unless doing so would seriously endanger his or her own vessel or passengers
  • Give, in writing, his or her name, address, and vessel identification to anyone injured and to the owner of any property damaged by the accident

  • You cannot be held liable for any civil damages for any assistance rendered in good faith and in a prudent manner.
  • In the case of a reportable accident, the operator or owner must file and accident report form supplied by The Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
