CDC Releases New Report About Teenage Fatalities From Traffic Accidents

Atlanta Injury Blog > 2012 > April > CDC Releases New Report About Teenage Fatalities From Traffic Accidents

A new report released data examining the relationship between traffic accidents and teen deaths. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s report showed that the death rate for youths ages 19 and younger has dropped about 30% from 2000-2009. Even with that change of a decrease, one statistic remained the same…accidental injuries (especially traffic accident injuries) remain as the leading cause of deaths for children ages 1-19.

We have talked a lot about effective driving programs and initiatives to help keep teen drivers safe. One of our other blogs includes “Effective Programs to Promote Teenage Driving Safety”. Out firm sees a lot of accident victims, and nothing is worse than an accident involving a teenage driver or passenger.

Annually, traffic crashes account for more than half of children’ deaths from accidents. This study reported that there was a 41% drop in traffic fatalities, a huge impact on the decrease of numbers. This could be a result of national and local governments putting more stress on children safety with cars. That includes: graduated driving license (GDL) program, safer restrictions on car seats, and spotlighted attention on prevention of accidents.

Teenage drivers do not always have a lot of driving experience. Being inexperienced and young can hinder teenage drivers as they are tempted by the distractions of their phones, their friends, their music, etc. So, seeing this drop of accidental deaths (including traffic accidents) for children 19 years-old and younger is a positive sign to keep on pushing more safety with children and cars.
