Distracted Driving and the Habit for Canton Drivers to Overcorrect

Atlanta Injury Blog > 2012 > April > Distracted Driving and the Habit for Canton Drivers to Overcorrect

On our blog, we talk a lot about the dangers of distracted driving. The consequences of distracted driving can lead to car, truck or motorcycle accidents. Some of our posts have broached topics such as texting while driving- the most dangerous form of distracted driving and illegal in the state of Georgia.

Some of our blogs about texting while driving-

One common reaction distracted drivers have is overcorrecting. Overcorrection is when a driver over steers as a reaction to something that happened on the road or in the car. Examples of overcorrection can be as simple as a vehicle running slightly off the road and the driver over steering the vehicle trying to get it back into the lane. It’s easy for this type of overcorrection to happen when a driver is distracted. Checking email, typing in an address to the GPS, reaching for something in the backseat, talking to a passenger are all ways that a driver can be distracted from his/her responsibilities on the road. When the distraction occurs and the driver makes a mistake, he/she experiences panic. Adrenaline from that panic sometimes takes over, and the driver makes errors. Those errors frequently are the cause of traffic accidents.

Here’s what to do to avoid overcorrecting-

  1. Stay calm.
  2. Don’t slam the brakes or spin the wheel back in the direction that you came.
  3. Take your foot off the accelerator and ease the vehicle back into the lane.

Canton accident lawyers at The Kalka Law Group can tell you that distracted driving- whether it be a car, truck or motorcycle driver- that is followed by overcorrecting the vehicle is dangerous. The driver might escape that scare without harming anyone. However, with constant Canton traffic and tight, curvy roads, the probability is higher that an accident of some degree will result from that scenario.
