New Report Shows Just How Safe Are Georgia Bicyclists and Pedestrians

Atlanta Injury Blog > 2012 > February > New Report Shows Just How Safe Are Georgia Bicyclists and Pedestrians

According to a recent report released last month by the Alliance for Biking & Walking, Georgia was ranked as 45th in the nation for bicycle and pedestrian safety. This means that there were only five other states that ranked worse than Georgia in walking and bicycle safety.

This 2012 Benchmarking Report revealed that Georgia spends about 1.75 percent of its federal transportation dollars on biking and walking. Because Georgia has seen a 111 percent increase in cycling popularity since 1990, a greater investment is needed. However, the state has not made additional funding available for bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

Pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents accounted for 1.3 percent of traffic fatalities in Georgia. Some tend to think this number could be blamed on the lack of investment in bicycling and walking in Georgia.

Many Georgia communities are now realizing that walking and biking have many benefits including healthcare savings, a better quality of life, improved public health, and an impact on the local economy. Because of this, many are supporting better bicycling accommodations across Georgia, such as the upcoming 7th annual Ride to the Capitol event in March. This event will attempt to rally more funding for safe bicycling transportation options.

Gainesville and some other Georgia cities have recently started making a push toward bicycle and pedestrian safety with the increase of pathways. Several cities are looking to join Roswell, Tybee Island, and Athens-Clarke County with the designation of Georgia “bicycle-friendly communities.”

The Kalka Law Group also supports better bicycling initiatives, hoping Atlanta bicycle accidents will be minimized and lives will be saved.
