What Is the Best Treatment Option for a Fractured Vertebrae From an Accident?

Atlanta Injury Blog > 2012 > June > What Is the Best Treatment Option for a Fractured Vertebrae From an Accident?

A popular surgery to treating a fractured vertebra, a vertebroplasty is a procedure in which doctors inject cement into the spine to patch the fractured area. This procedure was often popular because it offered pain relief in an easy, non-surgical way.

But, some doctors question whether or not the procedure truly relieves pain. Studies are constantly conducted to evaluate patients who receive the cement injection compared to those who receive a placebo injection. Both groups have shown improvement in back pain after the two procedures.

Because those kinds of study results exist doctors (and patients) sometimes hesitate to fix back pain with back surgery. The idea that there might be more to solving a patients’ problem than surgery is called comparative effectiveness- comparing various treatments to see which one works best.

Comparative effectiveness comes into play with many other types of back procedures. Should a patient undergo surgery for a slipped disc or take the rest and rehabilitation route? Or, should a patient undergo a spinal fusion or let time heal the problem?

These are serious questions that are hard to be answered. People with back pain and problems are under enough duress. They don’t want to go through an intense procedure, such as a vertebroplasty, without knowing that it will work.

We have seen clients come to us with fractured, cracked, dislocated vertebrae from a serious car, truck, or motorcycle accident. We obviously advise them legally regarding their accident claim, but we also make sure that they seek professional medical attention. Different doctors recommend different procedures.

The Kalka Law Group recommends finding a back specialist doctor who will be cautious yet thorough…and a doctor who you trust and feel comfortable with.

If you have a back injury due to a car, truck, or motorcycle accident and would like legal advice, contact The Kalka Law Group today.
