No matter the amount of experience a driver has on the road, accidents
happen. A distraction pulls a driver’s attention, a car swerves
to avoid an animal in the road, traffic suddenly halts, a tire blows out,
etc.- all these reasons and more happen every day. All motor vehicle drivers
should be aware and alert when driving.
Just recently,
the AJC reported two Atlanta Police Department motorcycle officers being involved
in two separate accidents in the same day. Both officers were said to
be alert and conscious at the scene and both suffered minor injuries,
according to theExaminer.
The first motorcycle wreck happened on I-75/I-85 northbound near University
Ave. when the Atlanta police motorcycle officer rear-ended the vehicle
in front when traffic came to a sudden stop. The accident caused quite
a traffic delay as four of the seven lanes (one being an HOV lane) were
blocked off for approximately one hour.
A second motorcycle wreck happened right around the same time, a little
north of downtown Atlanta. A second Atlanta police motorcycle officer
was involved in a crash on West Paces Ferry Road near I-75. Reportedly,
the officer’s accident was caused by a pothole in the road.
Motorcycle accidents are extremely dangerous. A motorcyclist is way less
protected than other motor vehicle drivers; there is nothing surrounding
the motorcyclist like that which surrounds a car or truck driver. Atlanta
motorcycle accident attorneys at The Kalka Law Group want to caution all
Georgia motorcycle drivers to travel carefully. The two accidents we detailed
above involved Atlanta police motorcycle officers, so even highly trained
drivers are bound to get in a traffic accident. No driver is completely
accident-proof.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 80 percent of motorcycle accidents result in injury or death.
Some injuries are more common than others.
Here is a list of the 3 most common injuries a motorcyclist can experience
after a motorcycle accident.
- Bone Fractures- including wrist, arm, shoulder and pelvis bones but especially broken leg bones
- Road Rash- ranging in degree, the most severe degree being third-degree road rash where the skin is completely removed
- Head Injuries- traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability
