On Valentine’s Day morning, February 14, 2012, an unfortunate incident occurred at Eagle Ridge Academy involving a pedestrian and car crash in Columbus. Officials indicate that the accident took place just after 8 A.M., as the 8 o’clock bell had just rung at the school.

A kindergartner was walking across the parking lot into school with his mother when he stopped to tie his shoe. As he bent down, a driver began reversing out of her parking spot. The child’s mother was in front of the child.

Police indicate that the driver hit the child on the right side, which knocked him face down on the ground. When witnesses motioned to the driver to back up, the driver panicked and drove forward instead. This caused the car to roll over the child.

The kindergartner was taken to the Medical Center and then transported to Egleston Children’s Hospital later that same day.

The school Principal Dlara David said, “It was impossible for the driver to see the child, so it wasn’t like anybody really did anything wrong. The mother brought the child in and he was just a little bit behind her and there wasn’t anything that could have been done to avoid this accident.”

School officials said that they followed safety protocol, but would like to offer reminders to people in the vicinity of schools:

  • Hold a child’s hand in parking lots
  • Drivers should be extremely careful when around schools and other areas with lots of children present

The 6-year-old boy is expected to make a full recovery after this accident; however, there is no word on when he will be released from the hospital. Police have not charged the driver with any charges at this time.

The Atlanta accident attorneys at The Kalka Law Group are glad that the boy is expected to make a complete recovery and wish him well during this time.
