As people across Georgia celebrated the three-day Memorial Day weekend,
the Georgia State Patrol was on watch for traffic accidents as motorists
traveled in and out of Georgia. Over the holiday weekend, the GSP kept
track of the special number of Georgia accidents and the injuries and
fatalities that accompanied those accidents.
Traffic was expected to heavy during this past holiday weekend, so heavy
that GSP sent out advanced press releases that urged drivers to be extra
cautious on the roads.
This year’s Memorial weekend, the GSP reported 13 fatalities from
traffic accidents,
according to Patch.com. That holiday period reflects a 78-hour window that began Friday night
and concluded at midnight of Memorial Day.
The fatal accidents occurred throughout Georgia in cities like Athens,
Columbus, Dublin, Helena, LaFayette, Douglas, and Toccoa and in counties
like Cobb, Putnam, and Houston.
As always, drivers should be cautious on Georgia roads during holiday
periods. Summertime is not a holiday per se, but past experiences show
that warmer weather and outdoor recreational activities can increase the
number of unfocused and/or impaired drivers behind the wheel.
The Kalka Law Group hopes for all Georgia drivers to be safe. We fully support
safety initiatives that help stop texting while driving, that help ensure
