Accident A cyclist was riding in the inside lane of the right-hand side of the four-laned North Decatur Road near Willivee Drive when he was hit by a driver. The driver of the Ford pickup who hit the Decatur cyclist was traveling northbound at approximately 6:30 a.m. According to the AJC, the 53 year-old cyclist was taken to a local hospital where he passed away.

A local witness stated that he heard a “loud boom”, and when he went to look outside, he said that he saw a vehicle in the middle of the road. A bit later, when he went outside, he said that he saw a body underneath the truck.

The Decatur bike accident shut down the stretch of North Decatur Road for a few hours, and the accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this point.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) published a small book, like a pamphlet, to help guide cyclists and motorists in roadway safety. Georgia Bike Sense: A Guide for Cyclists & Motorists details safety information and practices to help Georgia cyclists travel safely. Decatur cycling accidents can occur frequently and be quite severe in injuries for the cyclist.

Here are some tips to help avoid such bike crashes:

  • Ride to the right with the flow of traffic
  • Ride in a predictable manner
  • At intersections, stay on the road and in the lane you are traveling
  • Watch for road debris and grate/potholes
  • Watch for blind spots, especially when approaching turns
