A school bus accident near Social Circle and Covington caused 50 plus people being injured. Six school buses carrying students from Burke County Middle School in Waynesboro, GA to Six Flags, just west of Atlanta, crashes into each other this past Saturday morning. The accident happened just as the highway lanes merged near a construction zone on I-20.
According to Georgia State Patrol Spokesperson Gordy Wright, traffic slowed
as vehicles merged to comply with the lane closure just west of the Georgia
Highway 11 exit. One bus hit the rear of another bus, causing each following
bus to do the same, all the way to a motorist hitting the rear of the
sixth bus in the line.
Thankfully, with that many young students involved in an accident, the
injuries sustained were mostly minor in nature.
“Just a few bruises, scrapes,” said Amy Nunnally, a spokesperson
for the Burke County school system.
One of the bus drivers was the most seriously injured. She had to be cut
from the bus and airlifted to a hospital for treatment. But, the AJC reports
her to be in good condition as of Monday.
The chain-reaction crash is currently under investigation.
