Injured Motorcyclist Urges All Drivers to Be Cautious

Atlanta Injury Blog > 2012 > May > Injured Motorcyclist Urges All Drivers to Be Cautious

On August 29, 2011, Keith Allen was riding his motorcycle when he was seriously injured in a Georgia motorcycle accident. Almost one year later, he lives to tell about his crash and injuries that he suffered on that day.

As Keith was pulling out into traffic from a shopping center, two drivers stopped and waived him through. Keith didn’t see anyone in the third lane until it was too late. The driver in the third lane didn’t see Keith or his motorcycle. As a result, his motorcycle went flying about 25 feet, and he suffered life-threatening injuries.

The ambulance had to revive him when they got to the scene, and he endured a nine-hour surgery to repair his torn aorta. He also suffered broken ribs, a broken femur, broken tibia, broken foot and ankle, and lacerated spleen. Additionally, he suffered two brain injuries in this motorcycle crash. Keith had to learn how to speak, walk and eat again.

He is now asking all motorcyclists to be very careful, cautious, and defensive and to keep their bikes maintained properly at all times. Additionally, he is asking drivers of vehicles to put down their cell phones and pay attention so that they can see motorcyclists.

Between 2004 and 2008, motorcycle fatalities increased by 59 percent, and account for 12 percent of fatal motor vehicle accidents in Georgia.

As summer is approaching, more and more motorcyclists hit the streets and are put in more danger. This is why May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month: to urge all drivers to be more cautious and careful when sharing the road with each other this summer and throughout the year.
