You Can Be Arrested for Leaving the Scene of an Accident

Atlanta Injury Blog > 2012 > October > You Can Be Arrested for Leaving the Scene of an Accident

Last month a man was driving along Kimball Bridge Road when his vehicle ran out of gas. According to the police reports, the man stated that when he attempted to push his car to the side of the road, the vehicle accidentally plunged down the embankment and overturned. Instead of contacting a tow truck and reporting the accident to the police, the man called a friend to come pick him up, thus leaving the scene of the accident. This resulted in the vehicle being spotted and reported to the police as an injury accident. Police and firefighters spent time looking for victims of the apparent accident, but none where to be found.

Once police were finally able to locate the driver, they arrested him and charged him both failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and for leaving the scene of an accident. In Georgia, as in many states, it is a criminal offense to leave the scene of an accident. Thankfully, in this instance, nobody was seriously injured.

If you or a loved one has been involved in an accident in the Atlanta area, do not leave the scene of the accident. One of your first actions should be to immediately call the authorities so that any injured parties can be tended to by medical professionals, and a police report can be written and filed. Be sure to exchange information with the other party and, where possible, take photos of the accident scene. Do not admit any guilt or wrongdoing, regardless of whether or not you feel you contributed to the accident.
