Are Uber and Lyft Driver Qualifications Thorough Enough?

Are Uber and Lyft Driver Qualifications Thorough Enough?

For drivers interested in driving for a rideshare company, there are certain qualifications that they must meet. This varies based on the company, but one has to wonder if the qualifications are enough to ensure passengers are safe. Here are the qualifications for both Uber and Lyft.

What Is Necessary to Drive for Uber?

Uber drivers have to be the minimum driving age for their city, as well as having at least one year of experience as a licensed driver, or three years for those under 23 years of age. They must provide the company with a valid U.S. driver’s license, proof of residency, and proof of vehicle insurance.

The company does conduct a background check on drivers and the screening is necessary to ensure the driver is safe. However, can there be problems with the screening that could leave out some viable information, such as a drug or alcohol problem?

What Is Necessary to Drive for Lyft?

Lyft requires drivers to be at least 21 years old and pass the DMV and background checks. The company requires the driver to provide proof of having a valid U.S. driver’s license for at least one year, proof of insurance, and in many cities, a vehicle inspection must be performed.

The company also requires that the driver use a smartphone, which is used to notify the driver of potential passengers. While this is necessary in the industry, it’s also a potential cause of serious collisions caused by the distraction.

Are these qualifications enough to ensure passengers, other drivers, pedestrians, and others on the road are safe? If there is any area of the background check or qualification process that is flawed and a rideshare driver causes an accident because of this oversight, our team at Kalka & Baer is ready to work with injured parties to take action.
