What are the Common Causes of Rideshare Accidents?

Atlanta Injury Blog > 2019 > June > What are the Common Causes of Rideshare Accidents?

While many look to apps like Uber and Lyft for an alternative to driving while under the influence and when they don’t want to drive on their own, it’s not always the safest option. Unfortunately, rideshare accidents do happen, and there are multiple reasons for them.

Distractions While Driving

Rideshare drivers are doing what they do to make money. They get notified of numerous passengers who are looking for a ride near them and when they do, the driver must manually accept the job on his or her phone. This requires the driver to look away from the road.

This isn’t the only distraction, however, as there are several instances in which a passenger must be picked up in a crowded area. It’s easy for the driver to catch themselves scanning the sidewalks for their passenger, effectively taking their eyes off the road and increasing the potential for a serious crash.

Sudden Stops and Illegal U-Turns

Rideshare drivers are often taken off their normal routes and into places in which they may be unfamiliar. This doesn’t change the laws, though, and these drivers are often caught up stopping suddenly in the middle of the road to pick someone up or making an illegal U-turn to get to a passenger.

Both of these actions can result in a serious crash as other drivers are not anticipating them. Especially in areas where there are no traffic lights indicating a stop or U-turn opportunity. This puts multiple drivers and the passengers at risk of harm.

Negligent Driving

While Uber and Lyft require a clean driving record for drivers to work for them, it doesn’t mean that negligence does not exist. There is still the potential for reckless and negligent driving by the rideshare driver that can include any of the following:

  • Driving while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or prescription medication
  • Driving while fatigued
  • Driving while distracted, using their cell phone, or other actions
  • Driving recklessly, including speeding, running traffic signals, and more

No matter the situation, when a rideshare driver causes an accident—or in any matter of rideshare vehicle accidents—it’s important to understand how liability in these cases work. Our Atlanta rideshare accident attorneys are here to help explain what options you may have.
