Understanding Auto Accidents Find Out If You May Be Entitled to Compensation

Chances for School Zone Accident

The title of this article is a question that you should ask yourself. The answer is entirely dependent on you and your actions. If you engage in non-driving tasks at the wheel, you could be the cause of a distracted driving accident that endangers children and other pedestrians in a school zone.

Every second, drivers are confronted with traffic rules, signal lights, changes in speed limit, etc. However, drivers need to be aware that their behaviors at the wheel can affect bicyclists, pedestrians, and even children in school zones. Distracted driving in Atlanta school zones is a common occurrence, and drivers need to do a better job of focusing on children and other pedestrians in and around school zones in order to avoid Atlanta pedestrian accidents.

Studies have shown that drivers who are using their cell phones are at an increased risk for crashes. So when a driver is using a cell phone while driving through a school zone, there is a higher rate for child-car collisions in Georgia and throughout the nation.

School Zone Risks

A recent study by Safe Kids USA coordinated a road-side observation of drivers in school zones in 15 states. One of these study locations took place at a middle school in Marietta, Georgia, where a Safe Kids member collected evidence on distracted drivers. The observer was assigned to face a lane of traffic and look through windshields of approaching cars to determine if there was a distracted driver behind the wheel. This study found that one in six drivers was distracted behind the wheel in school zones.

The observers found that the top distractions, in order from highest to lowest, include:

  • Cell phones
  • Eating and drinking
  • Reaching or looking behind
  • Grooming
  • Reading

There was not a huge difference between female and male drivers. For every 1,000 male drivers, there were 154 distracted, and for every 1,000 female drivers, there were 187 distracted. However, females were found to be more distracted by cell phones than male drivers. Because a child's safety is important, drivers should limit their distractions in and around school zones.

If your child has been injured in an Atlanta car accident due to a distracted driver, you need to speak with an experienced personal injury lawyer at Kalka & Baer LLC.
