Overview of Car Accident Injuries

Atlanta Car Accident Lawyer

On average, more than 2 million Americans seek medical treatment in an emergency room after being injured in an auto accident each year. In 2011, 32,367 people died in motor vehicle crashes in the United States according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and a total of 5,308,000 non-fatal crashes occurred in that same year. Of those killed in 2011 due to motor vehicle collisions; 4,432 were pedestrians, many of who were small children; 4,612 were motorcyclists; and 677 were on bicycles.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the economic impact of car accidents is notable: in 2005 the lifetime costs of crash-related injuries and deaths were $70 billion. The CDC also reports that motor vehicle accidents are one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and in 2009, more than 2.3 million adult drivers sought medical treatment in an emergency room after being involved in an auto accident.

Common Types of Car Accident Injuries

Car accidents are not to be taken lightly, and even though automobile manufacturers continue to invest resources in seatbelt restraint systems, passenger and side-impact airbags and crumple zones, no one can prevent drivers from driving irresponsibly and causing serious if not life threatening car accidents.

Car accidents lead to a host of injuries ranging from minor to serious and life threatening, common car accident injuries include:

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI)A traumatic brain injury occurs when a person suffers a sudden bump, blow, or jolt to the head; it can also be a penetrating injury where a foreign object pierces the skull and penetrates the brain disrupting normal brain function. TBIs can range from minor to severe, in severe cases the victim may suffer extended periods of unconsciousness (coma), amnesia, or death. Minor TBIs can cause visual disturbances, headaches, changes in mood, depression, memory loss, nausea, vomiting and confusion to name a few.

Spinal cord injuriesSpinal cord injuries frequently occur when a blow fractures or dislocates the vertebrae. Most spinal cord injuries don't sever the spinal cord but instead damage pieces of the vertebrae that tear into the cord tissue or press down on the nerves that carry signals to other parts of the body. With a complete spinal cord injury, the cord cannot relay messages below the injury site, thus resulting in paralysis below the level of the injury. With an incomplete injury, the individual may have some movement and sensation below the injury.

Amputation injuries – When someone is involved in a serious car accident, either the violence of the accident or trauma to the injured body part may result in an amputation injury. The amputation can occur during the accident itself; for example, an arm or a leg can be severed during the accident, or a part of the body can be severely mangled but still partially attached by muscle, bone, tendon or skin that the emergency medical doctor has no other choice but to amputate the mangled area. There are complications associated with amputation of a body part, some of which include bleeding, shock and infection.

Other Minor Injuries from Auto Accidents

Other forms of car accident injuries include whiplash injuries which are common in rear-end collisions. Whiplash injuries can be described as a sudden strain to the muscles, bones and nerves in the neck. Symptoms of whiplash can include headaches, neck stiffness, sensory disturbances (pins and needles feeling) to the arms and legs, and pain in the shoulders and back. Whiplash symptoms may not appear for a few days following the accident and the pain can cause debilitating headaches and sleep disturbances.

Car accidents can also cause bruises, lacerations, cuts, broken bones and a host of other injuries depending upon the circumstances surrounding the accident itself. If you were injured in a car accident due to someone else's negligence, or if you lost a family member in a car accident, we may be able to help you file a wrongful death claim on behalf of your loved one.
